Red Cottage is well situated for those wishing to explore Mid Canterbury. The area is the gateway to one of the top ecotourism locations in Canterbury. The outdoor activities are just as diverse - tramping & hiking, bush walking, high country garden tours, mountain biking, fishing, windsurfing, historic sites, bird watching, ice skating & curling. Not to mention the fantastic ski slopes of Mt Hutt, Olympus and a number of Heli-skiing operators. Red Cottage Staveley is 1km from the renown Staveley Store, gateway to the Sharplin Falls or Mt Somers hiking trails. Its only 10 minutes from the start of the Mt Hutt Ski area access road and 20 minutes to the town of Methven.
